Description
Kaapzicht’s The 1947 Chenin Blanc is one of South Africa’s greatest expressions of Chenin Blanc from a vineyard planted in 1947, making it the second oldest Chenin vineyard in South Africa. From 75 year old vines, the 2021 vintage shows ripe quince, pineapple and stone fruit with some interesting savoury undertones. A lightly textured palate, with a hint of sweetness and balancing crunchy acid, results in a brisk finish. A super impressive wine with power, breadth and weight but a balancing harmonious acidity. The true personification of delicious old vine Chenin Blanc statesmanship. World class from every angle.
The grapes are hand harvested, whole-bunch pressedand spontaneously fermented, 50% in amphorae and 50% in barrel. After fermentation the wine is matured for a further 10 months in large 500L French oak barrels, with only 10% of barrels being new. The wine is bottled in the beginning of November each year and released in June. Each year this vineyard yields enough to produce 1, 800 bottles per annum, of which 50% is allocated for the export market.
Tim Atkin, MW, South African Special Report 2022: 95 points “We don’t do anything to it,” is Danie Steytler’s description of the winemaking here, as he rightly allows this amazing 1.1-hectare site to speak for itself. Quince, pear, citrus and white pepper flavours are framed by 50% new wood. 2023-30″
